On Tuesday evening, the Wilton Fire Department responded to a report of a building fire at 51 Island Street.

The first unit arrived within three minutes to find heavy flames throughout the first floor of one side of the two-family residence.

The fire was quickly upgraded to a working fire, bringing additional resources to the scene.

The occupants of the building were home at the time and were able to safely evacuate thanks to working smoke detectors. Unfortunately, one family pet was lost in the fire.

The Wilton Police, Wilton Ambulance, and multiple fire departments from surrounding towns provided assistance.

The fire was put under control at 10:47 p.m.

The home suffered significant damage to one unit and smoke damage to the other.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature, but the investigation is ongoing.

Island Street was closed with the assistance of Wilton DPW and crews cleared the scene at approximately 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Our thoughts are with the affected families during this difficult time.

Remember to check your smoke detectors regularly to ensure that they are working properly and can help keep you safe in the event of a fire.

Stay safe, everyone. 🔥
